We are thrilled to announce the first batch of names for the line-up. It looks like it’s going to be a glorious weekend!
Lau Nau (FI)
The Finnish psych folk musician Lau Nau has long been on our list of wishes for Santa Claus. And this year we get our wish granted! Lau Nau is part of the family tree of great artists from Fonal Records and has just released her 5th album, the wonderful “Poseidon”. Lau Nau is also a composer of film music, and indeed her music has a cinematic quality to it, which we are sure will mesmerize the audience on Fanø.
Emmanuelle Parrenin (FR)
We’re truly honoured to have the French folk legend Emmanuelle Parrenin perform at Fanø Free Folk Festival. 40 years ago she recorded the haunting masterpiece “Maison Rose”, which has just been reissued in 2017. It’s music with an almost otherworldly quality and might be seen as a French equivalent to artists such as Vashti Bunyan and Nico. Yet, Parrenin inhabits a world entirely on her own with her French lyrics and rich sonic layers of instruments such as harp and hurdy-gurdy. Recently Parrenin has started to tour again and we’re excited about her appearance on Fanø.
Fru Skagerrak (SE/NO/DK)
Join us on a trip through the rich heritage of Scandinavian folk music with the trio Fru Skagerrak. The trio consists of three excellent musicians hailing from three different countries: Maja Kjær Jacobsen (Denmark), Elise Wessel Hildrum (Norway) and Anna Lindblad (Sweden). With sparse arrangements and a lively energy the trio explores a shared heritage, bringing together diverse traditions and songs in several languages. Fru Skagerrak was born on Tønder Festival in 2011 and has since toured around the world – to critical acclaim. Nordic folk music at it’s finest.
Western Skies Motel (DK)
The music of Danish project Western Skies Motel seems equally inspired by the American guitar primitivism of artists such as John Fahey and ambient soundscapes. The combination of open guitar tunings and eerie tape loops creates images of desolate American landscapes, as it can be heard on the brilliant album “Settles” (2016), which received international acclaim with sites such as Drowned in Sound mentioning it as one of the best ambient albums of that year.
Equipped with two guitars, a vast array of effect pedals, drum machines and synth modules, the Aarhus-based duo ZRN has shaped a signature sound which is a delicate and tender waltz between sheer noise and beautiful, droned-out smouldering soundscapes. Originally founded as a more experimental and improvised side-project to the band Tales of Murder and Dust, the duo has continued to explore paths of dark and ambient textures with a feminist agenda, as it can be heard on their latest record, “Swim EP” (2017).
More acts will be announced early 2018.
